0000008 - Jerome & Company (Benham Printer label) New Haven, CT (Chauncey Jerome)

by: Johnson, James; on: January 31st, 2008

Jerome & Company (Benham Printer label) New Haven, CT (Chauncey Jerome), Circa 1857. Shelf column and cornice, with flat columns on a rosewood case. I have seen this same case design made and distributed by Waterbury and Gilbert. This is Chauncey Jerome's patented case, believed to be his only patent, I have seen cases with a paper date strip on the inside of the door that says “Patented April 14, 1857, by Chauncey Jerome.” Mine does not have the label on the door. The 30 hour movement is an unsigned, early pinned movement. Jerome at this time was buying cases and movements actually manufactured by others. Based on the label, Jerome did market this particular clock as a Jerome & Co.. Original rosewood case, painted spandrels on the upper glass, and great lower reverse painted tablet. Original zinc dial, weights, and pendulum. The inside label is intact in the center, but worn in the weight chutes. Measures 31 1/2 inch high x 14 1/2 inches wide. On my Scale of: 1 - 5.0 Condition is 4.5 +.

0000029 - Ansonia

by: Woodoff, Jeremy; on: February 2nd, 2008

A clock with a synchronous electric motor, mother-of-pearl and gilt metal case, and minute and hour dials of clear acrylic plastic with hands printed on the reverse of the dials. The outer acrylic dial is turned to set the time. This clock was manufactured in the 1930s or 1940s. It appears to have been an attempt by the Ansonia Clock Co. to reconstitute the business following the cessation of its operations in 1929 and the selling of its equipment to the Soviet Union.

0000030 - Tall Clock I made in 2007

by: Hollen, Joe; on: February 2nd, 2008

I had bought an old Urgos 5 tube chime movement, and I needed to find or build a case for it. I bought plans, but I didn't like them. So, I looked at some pics of Tall Clocks from a few books with features that I liked, and I built this clock from those pictures. I tailored the case to the movement, and I made sure that it would fit my ceilings... It's made entirely of Cherry with a Winter Birch backboard.

0000032 - George D. Hatch - Banjo

by: Johnson, James; on: February 2nd, 2008

G. D. Hatch, Attleboro, MA, unsigned Massachusetts weight banjo. Circa 1850’s George Hatch was in partnership with David Williams; they capitalized on the popularity of Willard and Howard models and produced a large quantity of clocks in the 1845-1870 period. Certain characteristics identify these: the way the pendulum bob is removable for shipment; the gold stenciled tablets, basic shape of the movement and the case details. In good original condition with expected normal wear. The glass is original, with some added paint backing to stabilize flaking. The wood pendulum stick has been repaired with wrapped string just above where the bob hooks on (perhaps when a weight let loose), it appears that someone user tan paint to either add contrast or stop dial flicking (I hate to risk disturbing it). Still, all and all, a nice example of an early weight driven banjo. Height 29 inches On a Scale of 1-5.0, Condition 4.0

0000035 - SETH THOMAS #6 REGULATOR - DOUBLE TIME

by: Wasserman, Robert; on: February 3rd, 2008

In 1883, the railroad industry's General Time Convention, realizing the necessity of having a uniform time system, decided to institute "Standard Railroad Time" throughout the U. S. and Canada. This clock harkens to that era.

The railroads henceforth operated with much greater efficiency, and passengers, shippers and railroad personnel benfitted from less confusion and greater safety the new standard afforded.

However, many cities and towns at first (and some for many years) refused to get in step with the railroads, instead deciding to stay on Sun Time (designated as "City Time" or "Local Time" on these clocks). Reflective of this, there was some continuing demand for these dual-time clocks which resulted in Seth Thomas keeping this model in its catalogues until the early 1900's.

As the years passed and Standard Time became the rule (and U.S. law, in 1918) thus making the dual-timekeeping function irrelevant, most of these Double-Time Regulators were discarded. Others suffered the fate of being eviscerated of the bottom motion works and dial and their utility continued as "regular" timepieces. We occasionally see one of these altered clocks at auction. Precious few complete clocks have survived intact. (Walnut - 49")

Sits on a walnut base, 14 1/2 inches by 7 1/2 inches, total height is 16 1/2 inches without the dome. The dome is original with bubbles and a 3-inch crack on backside (still holding together). The statues have lost most of their original gilt, having a highlighted pewter color. Some green in the grooves that matches the sash surrounding the dial. To me this is typical of original finishes on the palace series. As is the screw holes through the original paper dials. I prefer the lack luster original guilt to re-guilded restorations. Gilbert Mfg. Co, Winsted, Conn., Wall - Short drop octagon, Circa: 1860-1870’s, 8-Day, time, strike, simple calendar with a Galusha Maranville calendar dial (patented in 1861). Case: Rosewood veneer. Gilbert Manufacturing was in business from 1866 to 1871 when the factory burned. The case design was patented by George B. Owen on Sept 28, 1869. The interior label is very good. Unfortunately there are several veneer chips in the rosewood veneer on the octagon top (leftside) and an attempt to refinish the chipped veneer. Dial, hands, bezel, pendulum and case hardware are all original. Again, the dial has suffered heavily and is in poor condition. But the price was right. Height 22 inches. 0000062 - Girandole Clock

by: Hollen, Joe; on: February 5th, 2008

This is one of the "Banjo sized" Girandole clocks that I've recently made. A banjo movement is about an inch or so shorter than a true "Girandole" movement - which means the case, sidearms, etc. must be made a bit shorter too ! ... It's made of solid mahogany with a winter birch backboard. I designed the sidearms via "Emachineshop.com". I also did the reverse glass painting... I know ! - It's certainly NOT up to the standards of the experts... But the "price was right" :-)

Gutta Percha is a natural latex obtained from "Palaquium gutta" and several other evergreen trees of East Asia. Refined Gutta-percha is a polyterpene, i.e., a polymer of isoprene but it is not very elastic. Gutta-percha is an excellent nonconductor and is often employed in insulating marine and underground cables. It is also used for golf-ball coverings, surgical appliances, and adhesives. Its earliest uses was in dentistry, as holders for photographic tin-types during the Civil War and through Samual B. Jerome patents in 1870, as decorative inserts in numerous clock cases.

This Cuckoo was made back in the 1840's - 1850's. Has pins holding the clock works together, newer ones have nuts. It needs one more grape leaf bone hand and it needs a original Pendulum like the one in the photo. I still need to clean the clock works. This was my first clock that I found at a flea market in 2005 that I now collect.

by: Mueller-Maerki, Fortunat; on: February 12th, 2008

This is a very unusual cloach as it is the only clock I have ever come across that displays the time graphically in BINARY nubers (or more precisely in the binary equivalent of decimal the decimal numbers). See if you can figure out how this display is read using the several labeled photographs.

Hint: There are three times two rows of LEDs. The top pair is hours, the middle pair minutes, the bottom pair is seconds.

A truely different clock. I bought it on a canadian website in the mid 1990s.

This is a somewhat unusual hybrid of a clock, the timekeeping device is a simple quartz clock but the display is quite unusal: It shows the time in a picture frame type panel containing three overlapping circles, each with 60 Light emitting diodes (Red for seconds, green for minutes and orange for hours).

0000101 - New Hampshire 'Old Man of the Mountain' Girandole Clock

by: Hollen, Joe; on: February 13th, 2008

In 2003, New Hampshire's State Symbol, a natural rock formation that resembled a "man's profile" fell from the side of Cannon Mountain. (This is the same "profile" that you'd see on the "tail's side" of the "New Hampshire Quarter"). To commemorate the demise of our State Symbol, I designed a clock to memorialize it. It's another variation of the "Banjo Sized Girandole Clock" that I make in my home shop... This clock is undergoing it's final fit and finish on the "build-stand"... All mahogany with brass trim, sidearms, and eagle finial... This same "type of clock" (a different one) is featured on the C. A. Lenderman website. Mr. Lenderman makes high quality Banjo Clock movements...

Arthur French Poole was granted his first patent in 1899, for an electric clock, and over his lifetime he received an estimated140 patents for clocks and clock systems. He was employed by several companies and made numerous moves throughout US until in 1924. In 1924, Poole moved to Westport, Connecticut to start his own clock company. The company was named Poole Manufacturing. Future investors; Frank L. Morse and H. Herman Westinghouse were interested in Poole’s clocks and they persuaded him to move to Ithaca, In 1930 Poole again struck out on his own as a clock manufacturer. Poole died in 1934 and his patents were sold to a friend John H. Barr. Barr took over the Ithaca works then started a factory in Weedsport, New York, (1937-1940’s) which continued to make Poole electric clocks under the “Barr” trademark.

0000117 - Boston Clock Company 'Black Mantle' Tandem-Wind

by: Hollen, Joe; on: February 15th, 2008

This clock has the *very interesting* Tandem Wind movement that the Boston Clock Co. is famous for. It has a "balance wheel & hairspring" escapement. Putting the key in the winding hole and turning to the right will wind up the "time side". Conversely, turning the key left winds up the strike side". I equate it to an oversized watch-works :-) The case is Marble. The clock must weigh 25 lbs ! It also has a porcelain dial (which has some slight damage). Made Circa 1892 ...

0000129 - Ingraham Mosaic Ionic Wall Clock

by: Thornberry, Steven; on: February 24th, 2008

This is an example of the Ingraham Ionic wall clock with a mosaic pattern. The mosaic pattern is somewhat unique in that it has four sections rather than the usual eight. Some of the mosaic pattern is now hard to make out. It is all original with a good label. The other major clock manufacturers made their own versions of the Ionic, but I believe that this is the best. It has Ingraham's time only movement, which I think was one of their best movements. I date it to between 1880 and 1890.

This one is an all original eight-day with a lyre movement. I believe the case is rosewood. It has beautifully simple lines and, in style, appears to be a forerunner of the St. Louis in the Seth Thomas City Series.

0000132 - HAC Mini Cottage Clock

by: Thornberry, Steven; on: February 24th, 2008

Saved from the rubbish heap is this nice-looking 9" cottage clock by the Hamburg-American Clock Co. (Hamburg-Amerikanische Uhrenfabrik). It dates from around 1890 (after the McKinley Tariff but prior to the adoption of the HAC crossed arrows logo, which was, I believe, about 1892). Different to my knowledge is the recessed base, with the feet on each side, which provides a different style of case for these minis. It is a 30-hour time and alarm and appears to be made of pine (as might be expected).

Arguably one of the finest double-dial calendar clocks made, the Ingraham Calendar has the B. B. Lewis patented calendar movement, a monument to simplicity for the operation it performs. This jumped from February 28, 2007, to March 1, 2007, and I await what will happen in this leap year. This is a time and strike clock that dates from the mid-1880's and has a walnut case with lovely carvings.

0000141 - F. Kroeber, Walnut Champion, Parlor Clock

by: Macomber, Barry W.; on: February 28th, 2008

This is very similar to the Ansonia "Monarch". It stands 23 1/2 " tall. Someone had put a glossy white dial on this. I was able to remove it to expose the nicely aged original? dial. Also someone painted all the metal with dull gold paint which I stripped off. It has been refinished and the top carving on the right appears to be a replacement. The glass was plain so I applied gold transfers. Original movement and pendulum in nice condition. I don't know if the finial is original or if it should have an urn like the Monarchs. Very dark label on the back.

by: Thornberry, Steven; on: February 28th, 2008

This is a 9" cabinet clock with a 30-hour round movement, marked "Ansonia Clock Co. Ansonia Conn." I have not seen one like this elsewhere, and the round movement is unfamiliar to me (but I am not an expert on Ansonia movements). I was told that it may have been black originally, because the backboard is blackened (though I am not convinced it was black all over). I am judging it to be around 1880; so it would have been made by the second Ansonia Clock Co, rather than the much earlier first. However, it could be earlier. There is no label and no other marking, except on the movement, as indicated.

0000154 - Subminiature Vienna

by: McElroy, Howard S.; on: March 6th, 2008

Subminiature Vienna is 18" tall with a 3" porcelain dial. The dial was reshot, is not original. This clock runs one day on a winding and has interesting feature: The pendulum is thread suspended. Unlike most viennas, the escapement is recoil. Suspension is three point posts. Maker unknown. No identifying marks. I call this design architectural with it's plates, gussets, supports, etc. The design is not particularly elegant, smooth or flowing as many Viennas. Tracks are still visible where faux jade buttons with brass surrounds embellished it and not to my likely. Many were missing so I removed the remainder. VERY reliable. Very accurate, surprisingly. Late 1800s is only a guess.

This beautiful, well crafted subminiature Dachluhr is a recent reproduction possibly made in Eastern Europe. It is not of Asian origin. With mahogany veneer, inlay banding, and precision cabinet work - it is a credit to it's creator. The reliable deadbeat movement is of medium quality, not having the thick plates and quality wheel work of it's predecessors. This is a one day runner and is very reliable. This six light Dachluhr is 16" tall with a 3" dial and machine turned bezel. Mounting is bayonet posts.

by: McElroy, Howard S.; on: March 7th, 2008

This beautiful little reproduction was probably made in eastern Europe and may not be thirty years old. Ebonized finish covers hardwood cabinet with detail and forming reminiscent of old viennas. Notice it is a little thicker than most miniatures - a telltale of reproduction often. The movement is deadbeat; the mount is four post bayonet. The movement quality is medium, not having thick plates and high quality wheel work of the originals. This is a one day runner on ten ounces. It is 23" tall and the 3" dial has a machine turned bezel.

This is an efficient eight day runner with a deadbeat escapement and a one pound weight. Movement is shelf mount. This is an ebonized finish and probably dates to the late 1800s. Maker is unknown. Otherwise pretty tight. Ebonised finish is original. Deadbeat escapement of course and mounts on a four post bayonet. No maker's ID that I can find. Circassian walnut with inlay banding and a high gloss finish make this a real looker. Gustav Becker MAY be original. I doubt it. The case IS old. The movement is old. In the tradition of many six light dachluhrs, the front door is of lift out construction. Late 1800s would be a good estimation of it's age. The clock that has more names than any I've ever known. Even called a monastery clock for whatever reason I don't know. This one was an all metal kit by Selva I built from the original, untouched kit. With a contrate escape wheel, this is truly a verge escapement with two pallet flags on a verge staff. A reproduction of what is believed to be the first mechanical clock ca 1300, a poor regulator but an interesting timepiece.

The dark chestnut case is in original condition. The dial was redone (distressed finish) at least 50 years ago. J. J. Beals, on the dial was a Boston clock merchant who was in business around 1870. This clock was manufactured by Ingraham in six sizes: 10, 12, 14, 18, 20 and 24 inches. Since this clock's dial measures approximately 9 inches in diameter, I guess this is what they call the 10 inch model..

by: McElroy, Howard S.; on: March 9th, 2008

This 8 day miniature is 25" tall with a 5" dial. An efficient movement, it can accomplish this on a few oz.! This is a recased movement. Movement is old and of VERY high quality, while case is very recent. Case is an ebonised finish over a heavy oak laminate, very much unlike case construction of early viennas. Very much a marriage with very little original, this would not be highly regarded by a specimen collector.

0000169 - Vienna laterndluhr miniature month-runner weight wall clock

by: McElroy, Howard S.; on: March 9th, 2008

This miniature is very probably a recased old movement. It is 32" tall with a 5" dial. The dial and beautifully machine turned bezel are probably reproductions. The movement is post mounted and the steel pendulum rod has a knife edge suspension. A VERY efficient miniature, this clock runs a month on THREE POUNDS! In traditional case construction, this nine light laterndluhr has lift out lower box and throat doors. The hood slides off properly and the door has a hidden hinge. Mahogany and inlay banding set off this finely constructed case. Case may have been made recently in Eastern Europe. Because it is a recase, it's value will be only a fraction of a true, complete original.

0000170 - Vienna monthrunner biedermeier dachluhr weight wall clock

by: McElroy, Howard S.; on: March 10th, 2008

This moustachioed beauty is a recased vienna. It's style reflects the biedermeier era, first and second quarters 1800s. Recased about twenty years ago, this gorgeous case was made with all the materials and construction methods of it's ancestors. Lower door is lift out. Upper door is swing open with hidden hinges. On the dial is "Josef Lorenz IN WIEN". This monthrunning movement, deadbeat of course, is old. I seriously doubt Lorenz had anything to do with it. No marks or anything on movement would suggest that. The dial and machine turned bezel are magnificent but I believe both are reproductions. 42" tall, I would call this a medium size vienna. A steel pendulum rod and all brass, both sides, bob - are all proper for this period. A certifiable original with documentation would bring MANY thousands more than this magnificent recase.

0000171 - Biedermeier Vienna weight wall clock

by: McElroy, Howard S.; on: March 10th, 2008

This beautiful clock, a fine example of the biedermeier period, first and second quarters, 1800s, is a marriage and has been totally restored. Beautiful red mahogany and inlay banding all around accent this style. The carving atop is original but the two ends have been recarved. They were missing. Doorglass and door instllation remain for completion. You may notice a wire bridge between the case pillars. They have bowed out with age and the bridge is to coax them back straight. This efficient eight day runner does so on only a few oz. At 36" tall, I'd call this a small vienna.

0000172 - Continental Cathedral skeleton architectural

by: McElroy, Howard S.; on: March 10th, 2008

This skeleton clock was probably made in Great Britain, late 1800s. Note that the plates and most of the wheels and trim are castings - not hand cut or machine made as in more expensive skeletons. An eight day runner, has an anchor type recoil escapement and fusee chain drive. The top finial is not original. The bell might be original. The plaque on front may be the seller's. 0000174 - Verge foliot anno columbus skeleton shelf clock

by: McElroy, Howard S.; on: March 10th, 2008

This clock has been reproduced in many different versions, sizes, and configurations for many years. Some were kit clocks. This one was made by Baumann A.G. Switzerland and is a shelf sitting version unlike most that hung on the wall and were weight driven. Made entirely of wood and powered by a spring, this one is 14" tall and runs several days on a winding. This design is believed to be the very first mechanical clock, predating pendulums. It uses a verge staff with flags for pallets. Regulation is very poor and are regarded more as conversation pieces than timekeepers. Regulation is accomplished with the two buckets on the crossarm atop.

0000175 - Ingraham Drop Octagon

by: Thornberry, Steven; on: March 11th, 2008

Ingraham eight-day time-only Drop Octagon wall clock. This was a popular type for use in schools and is often referred to as a schoolhouse clock. This example has stamped on the dial the numeral 1, which may have served as an inventory or other control number. The movement has the date "11 30" (November 1930) and so may be dated to about 1931. This date is consistent with the style of the remnant of the label on the back. A good timekeeper.

0000178 - Gilbert or Ithaca Longcase Clock

by: Thornberry, Steven; on: March 11th, 2008

This is possibly the Gilbert Hall Clock No.24, from 1900-1910. Eight-day spring driven Gilbert movement, though unsigned. However, there are notable differences in this clock and the one described in Tran Duy Ly's book on Gilbert clocks. In particular, the strike on this clock is on a coiled wire gong, whereas the one in Tran's book has a 6-bell chime strike. This could also be an Ithaca Longcase clock, for which Gilbert supplied movements.

0000184 - English fusee dial clock, c. 1845

by: Radano, Chris; on: March 12th, 2008

The case is made of rosewood, with rosewood veneer. Retains 99% of it's brass inlay. The dial is 8", the round timepiece movement (unrestored) just under that diameter. If not for the cast bezel and thick, convex glass, the movement would be substancially heavier than the case. The dial is repainted, which is understandable when the clock is disassembled. 0000232 - Biedermeier Vienna subminiature weight driven wall clock

by: McElroy, Howard S.; on: March 18th, 2008

This stunning subminiature probably dates to the second quarter of the 1800s. A mere 21" tall with a three inch porcelain dial, this miniature runs three days on a single winding. The top crest is a wood carving. Many are gesso. I believe most here is original. Note the cam style beat regulator. The hardwood case is embellished with faux woodgrain. The piecrust bezel is a brass casting. It is deadbeat and runs on only a few oz.

0000233 - Dunning Regulator style reproduction

by: Hollen, Joe; on: March 18th, 2008

This is my first "J. N. Dunning style" regulator, made in Black Walnut (a very nice wood to work with ! ). It's 44" high with an 11" dial. It uses a standard Banjo style weight driven movement. I used "Birchwood-Casey" (gunstock finishing) items for finishing the case. Their "stain / stock-filler" is just the ticket to fill in all the VERY large pores in the Black Walnut. After it dries, you rub it down lightly with a cloth, then use a piece of burlap to really drive the wet-powdery filler into the wood. Once that dries, a good 320 grit sanding, then multiple coats of "Tru-Oil" finish, with 600 grit sanding in between yeilds a fine finish. (If the finish is good enough for a gunstock, it'll last several lifetimes indoors !!!

by: Hollen, Joe; on: March 19th, 2008

This is a Presentation Banjo that I made in 2004. (It was more like an "experiment") I used a "Willard" movement as sold in the Timesavers catalog... last time I do that !!! They're an absolute bear to fine tune and get "ticking" ... I must admit though that it's been running great for four + years now ! I painted the glasses in an S. Willard Geometric style...

0000235 - Old Man of the Mountain clock, a different version

by: Hollen, Joe; on: March 19th, 2008

This is a "less fancy" version of the "Old Man... Clocks" that I make here in NH. This one has wooden sidearms, a smaller bracket, and less ornate door than the previous Old Man clock that I submitted here. The detail and grain structure of the African Mahogany used in this clock though was superb. Approx. 42" tall...

0000236 - New Haven Banjo - The Waring

by: Thornberry, Steven; on: March 19th, 2008

A New Haven banjo clock known as the Waring, dating from ca. 1930. It was made during the heyday of the banjo revival in the first part of the 20th century. It is an eight-day time and strike, spring-driven banjo. So far as I can tell, this one is in good original condition. It is appx 38" long and 11" at the base of the box. New Haven made a number of banjos, and this is one of their largest.

0000241 - Waterbury Longdrop, Heron

by: Thornberry, Steven; on: April 2nd, 2008

This is a time-only Waterbury longdrop clock known as the Heron. Made in Oak, it is dated ca. 1906. It is 32.5" long with a 12" dial. Retains original beat indicator. Pendulum may not be original to the clock, but it appears to be a Waterbury pendulum, nonetheless.

0000242 - Waterbury Calendar Wall Clock

by: Thornberry, Steven; on: April 4th, 2008

This is a calendar wall clock by Waterbury that is not listed in Tran Duy Ly's book on Waterbury clocks. It appears to be mahogany, is 27" long and 9.75" wide at its widest, and has a 5" dial. I estimate the date to be in the 1890's, but I am by no means certain. It has no label, and the dial is not signed. The movement, however, is a signed Waterbury. The person from whom I acquired it stated that he thought it might have been made for the export market and called it a "cottage" wall clock (his own term). That term is, nonetheless, appropriate. It has clean, simple lines and is of a size to fit in a smaller space.

0000243 - Waterbury Wall Clock, Prescott

by: Thornberry, Steven; on: April 4th, 2008

This Waterbury wall clock is named the Prescott, one of the Waterbury wall clocks named for Canadian cities. It dates from ca. 1890. It is time only, 32" high, 10" wide, has a 6" dial (some flaking) and glass sides (small fragment missing from the upper corner of one side). I believe the wood is walnut. The original Jacot regulator pendulum is missing its needle. Movement is signed and there is a good label on the back. It is an accurate and consistent timekeeper.

0000244 - Ingraham Wall Clock - the Reflector

by: Thornberry, Steven; on: April 4th, 2008

This is the time-only model; it also came with a strike, as well as a 24-hour dial, and with a B. B. Lewis calendar movement (the Ingraham Ionic calendar clock). It dates from the 1880's. It is 29" long with a 12" dial. The signed movement has solid front and back plates, similar to the one shown on page 134 of Tran Duy Ly's book on Ingraham clocks, but with the escape wheel outside the front plate. The label and the bottom glass reverse painting are missing. The clock originally came without the rosettes; so I had some made up, and they look fine. Note also the oversized hinges on both the top and bottom doors. Not sure of the wood; possibly walnut.

0000248 - Petite Banjo Clock

by: Thornberry, Steven; on: April 5th, 2008

This "Petite" banjo clock (name on dial) dates probably from the 1920's. There is a repairman's date on the back of 10/28/30. The thoat painting and bottom glass picture are of a style similar to others in that period. The hairspring movement is by Waterbury (signed on inside back plate), but I do not know whether Waterbury also made the case or whether another company made the case and fitted it with a Waterbury movement. It does not appear in Tran Duy Ly's Waterbury book. The 30-hour movement does not keep good time at the moment but undoubtedly could be adjusted. Note that it does not have side rails but, instead, gold-painted beveling along the fron edges. It also does not have a bottom compartment.

0000249 - New Haven Wall Clock - the Winnipec

by: Thornberry, Steven; on: April 5th, 2008

This example of the Winnipec (or Winnipeg - I have seen it both ways) dates from the 1880's. It is 35" high with a 5.75" dial and is made in walnut. There is very nice burling in the dial board. The time-only movement is signed, and has the winding arbor at the number 7, which I have seen on several NH timepieces of this period. Most of the label remains intact, and the finials and pendulum are original. A very attractive clock.

0000250 - Brewster and Ingrahams Steeple Clock

by: Thornberry, Steven; on: April 5th, 2008

Brewster and Ingrahams were in business between 1843 and 1852. This clock probably dates from the latter half of their association (1848-1853). It is eight-day time and strike, 20" tall, and 9.75" wide at the base. The label is excellent; the ridged movement is signed, although the stamp is somewhat faded and does not show up in the picture. The dial is signed "Brewster and Ingrahams." The original signature has faded, and it appears that someone has lightly inked over it to bring it out a bit. The case has acquired a heavy patina. The movement has been well cared for and keeps good time for being about 160 years old. Elias Ingraham designed this sharp gothic, or steeple, style case, as well as the round gothic style (known popularly as the beehive style). They were popular clocks in the Brewster and Ingrahams production line and copied by many other major clock manufacturers.

0000288 - Seth Thomas Column Clock

by: Thornberry, Steven; on: April 8th, 2008

This is the Seth Thomas Column Shell, a 30-hour weight driven clock. The movement is marked "Plymouth," on the remains of the label "Plymouth Hollow can be made out, and the label was printed by Case, Lockwood, & Co. This dates the clock to 1860 - 1865. Although the label is over 50 percent gone, the original bottom glass is in very good shape. The dial has been touched up, not the way I would have done it, but passable, nonetheless. The rosewood case itself is in good shape.

0000289 - E & A Ingraham Round Gothic

by: Thornberry, Steven; on: April 8th, 2008

Upon the dissolution of Brewster and Ingrahams in 1852, Elias and Andrew Ingraham formed the E&A Ingraham Company. This entity lasted until December 1856, when it closed due to bankruptcy. E&A Ingraham's stock was essentially that of Brewster and Ingrahams. This is a nice example of the round gothic (or beehive) style developed by Elias Ingraham. It is eight-day time and strike. It has an excellent label, but the original dial has suffered a fair amount of paint loss. The movement is unsigned and bears strong resemblances to both Chauncey Jerome movements and New Haven movements manufactured shortly before or after they they purchased Jerome in January 1857. If this is one of those movements, it would seem to date the clock closer to 1856 than to an earlier year of the firm. E&A Ingraham did not manufacture its own movements.

by: Krongold, Stan; on: April 8th, 2008

Elmer O. Stennes of Weymouth, Mass. made this clock while he was serving a sentence in prison for killing his wife. The clock is marked on the case "MCIP" (Made Clock In Prison or some say it stands for Massachussettes Correctional Institute at Plymouth). The clock is also marked 12-72 (December 1972). It is rumored that bee keeping was a hobby of Stennes' and a small bee can be seen on the throat reverse painted glass as well as on the lower left of the dial between the VI and VII.

0000315 - Seth Thomas Troy

by: Thornberry, Steven; on: April 22nd, 2008

Seth Thomas clock is in the City Series and is called the Troy. It is 30 hour T/S. It had a few problems. I had to replace the dial; the original painted dial was flaking too badly to save it. The paper does not look too bad. The clutch washer pin was missing on the movement; so I put one in that seems to be working well (at least it has been keeping good time). I had to remount the movement; the original holes were wide enough for elephants to go through. It is, however, the original movement - an ST #33, I believe, and has a nice pendulum. It is still missing a piece of molding on the front right side of the dial. Not too noticeable, but it would be nice to have a replacement made. Tran Duy Ly shows this model for 1879-80. Interesting, however, is a green sticker on the front bottom of the dial board, mentioning the World's Fair 1892, Chicago Daily News, one cent. I'm not sure of the significance of that (if any). Perhaps the original owner bought this at the World's Fair? Some owner's later attachment, for whatever reason?
